Maya Food

The Maya relied a great deal on agriculture. They grew maize, sweet potatoes, beans, squash, and yucca. Of these maize, or corn, was the most cherished staple in their diet and remains so today. They also hunted for wild turkey, duck, deer, monkey, and peccary. They caught fish to add to their meals.

The bean of the cacao tree was used to make the "drink of the gods", chocolate! It was called the drink of the gods because only those who were nobility were allowed to enjoy the chocolate.
