Maya Architecture
![]()
The Mayan civilization had elaborate buildings. These buildings were not made of stone or wood. They were built with concrete! Concrete is an important building material still used today.
The Mayans built pyramids as monuments to their gods and leaders. Some of the pyramids were 200 feet high. The tops of the Mayan pyramids are not pointed like the Egyptian pyramids. Instead they are flat. The rulers and leaders would climb the pyramids and sit upon the flat tops.
Mayans also built palaces for the rulers. The pyramids
and palaces were often arranged around a central court or garden.
