Mayas

The Maya civilization is the oldest of the two civilizations (Maya, Inca) dating back to 1000 B.C. Their empire was located in Mexico in the Yucatan peninsula, Guatemala , and in parts of Belize and Honduras. During the Mesoamerican classic time period (300AD-900AD) the Mayan civilization created many cities such as Tikal, Copan, Uxmal, Old Chichen, and Labna. The population of these cities often reached 20,000 inhabitants.

Archeologists are not sure what happened to the Maya civilization. Some of the cities seem to have been abandoned. Was this because of earthquakes, war with other groups of people, a drastic change in climate, or perhaps a disease the Maya couldn't cure?
