A.D.-1530: Ponce de Leon explores and names Florida.
1521: Ponce de Leon is killed by Native Americans.
1539: Hernando de Soto explores Florida for Spain.
1564: The French build Fort Caroline.
1565: Spaniards drive out the French and from St. Augustine.
1740: English troops from Georgia invade Florida but fail to take it from spanish.
1763: The English take control of Florida by trading Havana, Cuba, to Spain for the region.
1775: The Revolutionary War begins.
1783: Florida is returned to Spain as part of a peace treaty.
1814: During the War of 1812, American general Andrew Jackson captures Pensacola from Spain.
1821: Florida becomes part of the United States.
