Native Americans
History
The story of people in Florida begins about ten thousand years ago when the first tribes arrived in the region. Little is known of these early settlers who lived by hunting and fishing. Later, societies of mound builders inhabited the area.

The Seminoles who live in south Florida today are the descendants of Creeks who originally lived in Georgia and Alabama. They fled to Florida during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The name "Seminole" means "runaway" or "wanderer" in the Creek language. Today, some Seminoles still live in their traditional thatched huts called chickees. Others have become integrated into the society around them.
