St. Augustine
In the 1500's, Spanish ships carrying gold sailed by Florida. The Spanish wanted to control Florida in order to protect their ships. At this time, the French controlled Florida. In an effort to control Florida, the Spanish formed a settlement at St. Augustine. Shortly after forming the colony, the Spanish drove the French out of Florida. Today, St. Augustine is the oldest city in the United States.

Since the 1880's, Saint Augustine has been a tourist resort. Tourism happens to be the city's leading industry. People visit Saint Augustine to see the oldest city in the United States as well as buildings built by the Spaniards.
