About The S.E.R.V.S. Program
The SERVS project, Support Encouragement & Resources Vital to Success was developed to deliver assistance to new teachers working in low performing schools and/or critical shortage subject area as defined by the State of Florida. These new teachers need knowledge, support and positive teaching experiences to help them develop into successful career teachers.
To support the success and retention of teachers in this project, SERVS Educators work closely with the participants to help them improve their teaching by coaching, modeling and providing support. The intent of the program is to enhance and enrich the current teacher induction and site based peer mentor support system. In this program, teachers will receive support from FGCU experienced, qualified SERVS Educators, who will coach, model lessons, facilitate, cheerlead and guide.
Participating teachers have access to the SERVS Educators who offer assistance in special areas such as grade level and/or subject matter expertise, use of technology, ESL, classroom management, special education, differentiated instruction and reading. Through this approach, the teacher benefits from more specialized expertise and also has the opportunity to observe different teaching styles. Also, the approach reduces the stress in trying to match the teacher and mentor in grade level, subject and compatible personalities. The directory of SERVS Educators on this site is searchable by grade level, county and area of expertise. Teachers can initiate requests for lessons to be modeled, observation/ feedback sessions or consultation about specific teacher concerns.
Participating new teachers are also encouraged to take graduate-level courses in the College of Education at FGCU to help fulfill certification requirements, add an endorsement and/or to meet "highly qualified" status. Often teachers have access to funds for tuition from their district or various grant programs.
