Policy for Selection and Placement of Field Experience and Internship Sites

General Policy of Placing Students

  • Placements offer a range of grades covered within the certification.
  • Placements offer opportunities to observe, interact, and teach with developmentally appropriate practices for all children including those who are linguistically (ESOL and LEP), socially, ethnically, culturally, physically, emotionally, and intellectually diverse.

Block 4 Practicum

Block 4 practicum has two placements within one semester.

Students must complete an application for the Block 4 integrated field experience. Applications for the Fall semester are due the last weekday of March. Applications for the Spring Semester are due the last weekday in September. Students must complete information cards corresponding to program areas and the appropriate worksheet.

Block 5 Internship

Block 5 internship has one placement within the semester.

Students must complete an application for the final internship. Applications for the Fall semester are due the February 15. Applications for the Spring semester are due the September 1.

Students are placed in a site and a grade level different from their Block 4 (non final) practicum when possible. Students must complete information cards corresponding to program areas.

Students may request a range of grade levels and a county for placement, indicating first and second choices. Students are encouraged to indicate a preferred area of the county (north, west, etc.). Students are asked to complete information that may affect placement (e.g., location of day care facilities and transportation difficulties). Such information is to permit placement choices, but guarantees cannot be made.

Students may not arrange placements with schools or teachers.

Students must list schools in which they are members of school improvement teams, SAC, etc., have close relatives employed and or attending. Interns should indicate on the placement card the relationship to the relative. Depending on the relationship, students may not be placed in those schools. Such information reported later may require reassignment and delay of placement.

Students are placed in schools with cohort groups when possible. The support and networking of cohorts are advantageous during the internships.

The College of Education makes all intern assignments in consultation with the county administrators, principals, and teachers. The College of Education and the respective counties have agreed upon all placements. Unless placement is inappropriate, as determined by the Internship Office, placements are final.

Placement at a non-public accredited school is permitted during the final internship when teacher and school meet established guidelines.

Students must meet application deadline for placement. This includes a completed application and successful completion of blocks one through three. Requests for extenuating circumstances must be acknowledged in writing from the Internship Office. Students must also complete an information card corresponding to program areas.
