Local Teacher Consultants Attended Advanced Institute on the Lewis and Clark Trail

Four National Writing Project at FGCU Teacher Consultants returned recently to Southwest Florida from Boise State University in Idaho, where they attended the Boise State Writing Project's ADVANCED INSTITUTE ON THE LEWIS AND CLARK TRAIL. The trip was funded in part through a grant from  the National Writing Project at FGCU.

The Institute, which took place from July 16-21, was held at the Syringa Lodge, located near the border of Montana. Institute presentations and discussions focused on reading and writing of a variety of text types including journals, primary documents, poetry, historical fiction and nonfiction, young adult novels, and multi-genre texts. Group adventures included hiking, rafting and auto touring the virtually unchanged Lolo Trail, and visiting historic sites like Weippe Prairie and Canoe Camp, where the Nez Perce fed the starved Corps of Discovery and helped them make canoes.

Among institute presenters were Julie Faneslow, frequent contributor to Smithsonian and author of Traveler's Guide to the Lewis & Clark Trail; poet and Sacagawea biographer, Josephine Jones; and a number of local Idaho outfitters, Native Americans, historians, botanists, and fish and wildlife experts.  Participants outlined instructional units, integrating what they learned at the institute, which they will take back to their own classrooms this fall.

The Lewis and Clark Trail Project was directed by Dr. Jeffrey Wilhelm, author of twelve books about the teaching of literacy, including the award winning You Gotta Be the Book and Reading Don’t Fix No Chevys
