Message from the Sanibel School Family & the NWP at FGCU
Carol Caldwell Smith passed away Dec. 15 after a long battle with cancer. During her 23 years teaching in Lee County she touched the lives of numerous students and colleagues. Carol began her teaching career in Lee County teaching middle school language arts at Fort Myers Middle School. After 11 years she moved to Gulf Middle before transferring to The Sanibel School, where she has flourished for the last 11 years. She was one of the first teachers in Lee County to become National Board Certified and was the Lee County Language Arts Teacher of the Year in 2007.
Carol was a dedicated language arts professional, sharing her expertise with other educators throughout the district. She served on many training cadres and was instrumental in improving student writing not only in her own classroom, but in the classrooms of her colleagues. Carol was also a 2001 participant in the National Writing Project Invitational Summer Institute.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made on Carol’s behalf to breast cancer awareness through the Susan G. Komen website at http://ww5.komen.org/donate/donate.html.
Please keep Carol's family in your thoughts and prayers.

The 2010 Invitational Summer Institute had 24 participants summer, 2010...the biggest ever!!! Stacey Elmeer coordinated the curriculum for the ISI and was assisted by Mena Granatino, Karen Torres, and Bambi Fischer. It was a great success!!! Great work Stacy, Mena, Karen, Bambi & TCs!!!

Lois Christensen, Jackie Greene, and Sheila Bolduc-Simpson were facilitators of a one-week literacy workshop in LaBelle specifically designed for Hendry and Glades County teachers during the summer, 2010. Twenty teachers attended the workshop. It is hoped that our participation in Hendry/Glades this past summer will foster more literacy activity from that region so that we can continue to extend our good works in that direction.

The March 27 NWP @ FGCU Conference titled, Rant, Reflect & Release Poetry! Using Poetry to Enhance Curriculum, was a big success. Please plan on attending the upcoming ones starting in the fall, 2010.
