Interview - Patricia Wachholz

What was your undergraduate major when you started and when you graduated?
Started with Biology and ended with Biology and English.

When you think of professional mentors, who had an influence on you?
Constance Weaver and Ken Macrorie, English professors from Western Michigan University. Mary Loftin Grimes-English Education at University of North Florida. Carol Etheridge-Curriculum and Instruction at University of Memphis.

What philosophy or theory is most appealing to you in your work?
Bandura's motivational and self-efficacy theories.

What are some of your favorite hobbies or special interests?
I am a gourmet cook and like to experiment with new recipes and cooking styles. I also love to read and am a film aficionado.

What is one of your favorite books or quotes?
I have so many favorite books that it is impossible for me to choose one or two, and I find new favorites all the time. My favorite quote comes from Winston Churchill, regarding criticism of the practice of ending a sentence with a preposition: "That is the sort of English up with which I will not put."

What are the courses which you typically teach?
Adolescent Literature, Methods of Teaching English, Classroom Management

What are your research interests?
Writing; self-efficacy beliefs; and the climate and cultures of successful classrooms.
