Interview - Thomas Valesky

What was your undergraduate major when you started and when you graduated? 
I started our in Chemical Engineering, but this lasted only one year. I switched to Psychology and English. This was during the late 60s and early 70s when Arts and Sciences were the "in" majors. A Master's degree in Counseling and Guidance got me into education, with an interest in special education and later school administration. 

When you think of professional mentors, who had an influence on you? 
There were two who influenced the directions that I took in education. The first was my 9th grade English teacher, Mrs. Moore, who gave me an appreciation for language, literature and writing. The second was my the major professor for my doctoral work, Dr. Frank Markus, who was has a terrific work ethic and provided an ideal model for my current professional career.

What philosophy or theory is most appealing to you in your work? 
As a former school administrator, I practiced the Theory of Transformational or Moral Leadership by James McGregor Burns. I would add to this theory the concepts of Total Quality Management, Continuous Improvement, and Learning Organizations as professed by W. Edwards Deming and Peter Senge as the most appealing as a philosophy of school leadership.

What are some of your favorite hobbies or special interests? 
Golf, boating, surfing the net, and listening to books on tape.

What is one of your favorite books or quotes?
The fifth discipline: The art and practice of the learning organization by Peter Senge. "The most ineffective workers are systematically moved to the place where they can do the least damage: management." The Dilbert Principle by Dilbert. [This is a joke(:-)]

What are the courses which you typically teach? 
Principles of Educational Leadership Organizational Development School Finance Human Resources Development.

What are your research interests? 
Inclusion. School-Based Decision Making. School Finance. Use of Technology in Educational Leadership.

What is one thing that you would like students to know about you? 
I want my students to develop the ethic that "School administrators must care about all kids and that kids come first". In addition, students should know that I have high expectation for them to participate in active learning experiences in my classes.
