Interview - Bill Engel

What was your undergraduate major when you started and when you graduated? 
My undergraduate major was Mathematics Education, M.S. in Mathematics, and Ed.D. in Teacher Education with specialization in technology

When you think of professional mentors, who had an influence on you? 
My mentor was Dr. Gene Smith from Wayne State University. Professor of Math Ed and President of NCTM. 

What philosophy or theory is most appealing to you in your work? 
Constructivism

What are some of your favorite hobbies or special interests? 
Magic-Sleight of Hand, Making and playing Native American Flutes, Garden Railroading, Stunt Kite Flying, Computer Simulations, Sailing, Ham Radio, and visiting our home in North Carolina.

What is one of your favorite books or quotes?
I spend most of my time reading "Technology for Dummies" series. "The more I do, the more I can do." by Engel

What are the courses which you typically teach? 
Elementary Mathematics Methods, Middle Mathematics Methods, Technology Programming Courses 

What are your research interests? 
Just finished two articles on "Genetic Programming for Optimization of Mathematical Functions", and "Using Logo for Simulation of Artificial Life"

What is one thing that you would like students to know about you? 
I am willing to try something new. I continue to experiment with my teaching.
