Interview - Larry Byrnes
What was your undergraduate major when you started and when you
graduated?
Undergraduate major was social science. Graduated in 1963 from
Michigan State University.
When you think of professional mentors, who had an influence on
you?
Tenth grade English teacher, my speech therapist from 2nd to 12th
grade, student teaching supervisor, and a philosophy of education
professor on my doctoral committee.
What philosophy or theory is most appealing to you in your work?
The works of Socrates, Plato, John Dewey, John Goodlad, and Theodore
Sizer have greatly influenced me.
What are some of your favorite hobbies or special interests?
I love physical exercise of all kinds, listening to a variety
of music, hiking, reading historical novels, traveling, and watching
epic movies like Ghandi, Lawrence of Arabia, and The Last Emperor.
I also enjoy reading biographies of influential people.
What is one of your favorite books or quotes?
My favorite book is Plato's Republic.

Foundations of Education courses.
What are your research interests?
Total Quality Management principles and processes as applied to educational
organizations, the History of Education in the United States, Teacher
Education in countries throughout the world, and citizenship education.
What is one thing that you would like students to know about you?
I think it is important for students to understand, appreciate
and promote respect for all persons and savor our similarities while
celebrating our differences and humans.
