What was your undergraduate major when you started and when you graduated?
Undergraduate major was social science. Graduated in 1963 from Michigan State University.

When you think of professional mentors, who had an influence on you?
Tenth grade English teacher, my speech therapist from 2nd to 12th grade, student teaching supervisor, and a philosophy of education professor on my doctoral committee.

What philosophy or theory is most appealing to you in your work?
The works of Socrates, Plato, John Dewey, John Goodlad, and Theodore Sizer have greatly influenced me.

What are some of your favorite hobbies or special interests?
I love physical exercise of all kinds, listening to a variety of music, hiking, reading historical novels, traveling, and watching epic movies like Ghandi, Lawrence of Arabia, and The Last Emperor. I also enjoy reading biographies of influential people.

What is one of your favorite books or quotes?
My favorite book is Plato's Republic.
"The great thing about this world is not so much where we stand as in what direction we are moving."
"Beginning with the early dawn each day I will radiate joy to everyone I meet. I will be mental sunshine to all who cross my path. I will burn candles of smiles in the bosoms of the joyless. Before the unfading light of my cheer, darkness will take flight."
"Nothing can resist the human will that will stake even its existence on its stated purpose."
"It is in your moments of decision that your destiny is shaped."
"We will either find a way or make one."

What are the courses which you typically teach?
Foundations of Education courses.

What are your research interests?
Total Quality Management principles and processes as applied to educational organizations, the History of Education in the United States, Teacher Education in countries throughout the world, and citizenship education.

What is one thing that you would like students to know about you?
I think it is important for students to understand, appreciate and promote respect for all persons and savor our similarities while celebrating our differences and humans.
