Courses in this sequence are directed to (a) certified teachers seeking to add ESOL (English to Speakers of
Other Languages) state certification/endorsement to their existing certification, (b) graduate students seeking
elective credit, and (c) graduate students in elementary education seeking a Literacy in a Diverse Society
concentration. Often these courses are offered using distance delivery methods.

This course provides an overview of the theoretical foundations
and applications of language instruction approaches, methods,
and techniques that are effective in the classroom. It will
focus on interactive and communicative language teaching methods
as well as specific strategies for integrated content area instruction
for limited English proficient (LEP) students and English language
learners (ELL) in mainstream classrooms. |

| TSL 5474: Testing and Evaluation for ESOL Teachers |

This course provides a general background in language
assessment issues, opportunities to examine language assessment
instruments, and practical experience developing and using
formal and informal assessment measures. The students/teachers/school
personnel will be able to critically analyze and select evaluation
techniques for measuring ELL/LEP students’ performance in
academic settings.

| TSL 5525: Cross Cultural Communication and Understanding
for Teachers |

This course provides an in depth discussion of the concept
of culture and helps students/teachers/school personnel recognize
the influence of culture on learning, communication, belief
systems and value orientations, and patterns of thinking and
behaving. Instructional applications include creating an appropriate
learning environment and/or curriculum and materials for linguistically
and culturally diverse students. Emphasis of this course will
include honoring diversity and caution to the dangers of stereotyping
and over generalizing to the diverse populations. |

This course provides students/teachers/school personnel with
information about various program options for second language
learners. It will focus on developing skills and techniques
for assessment, goal setting, teaching methods, and adaptation
of materials for the second language learners' varied needs.

| LIN 5010: Applied Linguistics and Second Language Acquisition |

This course is designed to introduce students/teachers/school
personnel with little or no recent acquaintance with linguistics
to the concepts and issues relevant to the field of applied
linguistics and second language acquisition. It will survey
phonetics, phonology, morphology, semantics and syntax. The
course will also include an examination of the role of the brain
in language learning, the nature of both first and second language
acquisition and its application when working with ELL/LEP students.
