So you want to be an educator

The field of special education is an exciting and rewarding education career that presents a wide variety of opportunities. Some of the professionals involved in special education include teachers, physical therapists, school psychologists, occupational therapists, sign language interpreters, speech language therapists, special education administrators and behavior analysts. The focus on student achievement and success for all children in No Child Left Behind has placed greater emphasis on ensuring that all educators are competent in meeting the needs of diverse learners; an area of expertise where special educators typically excel.

There is concern on a national level with recruiting and retaining highly qualified personnel in several areas of education; special education being one of the most critical needs areas. This concern has resulted in many programs and opportunities for persons entering the field to receive assistance with preparation programs such as scholarships and/or grants as well as loan forgiveness after completion of training and entering the field.
