Dr. Thomas J. Roberts is currently an Associate Professor of Educational Leadership in the College of Education at Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU). His primary teaching responsibilities are in graduate higher education administration courses and the university colloquium. Dr. Roberts has twenty-nine (29) years of experience in higher education and has served various types of institutions including comprehensive, doctoral granting, medical school, and major research university environments. He authored the first doctoral dissertation focusing specifically on the field of research administration and is recognized by his peers as an International Distinguished Faculty member in the field of research administration. Through the National Council of University Research Administrators (NCURA) he advocated for the establishment of on-line master degree programs focusing specifically on the field of research administration.
Dr. Roberts is an accomplished scholar and leader. He is the only two-time recipient (2007 and 2012) of the prestigious Rod Rose Award for Outstanding Scholarship from the Society of Research Administration International. His research interests include research administration, the perceived value of certification in higher education programs, higher education administration, demographic profiling, and educational leadership. Dr. Roberts has published numerous peer reviewed manuscripts and made dozens of conference and other invited presentations. He is currently Chair of the Academic Review Editorial Committee for the Journal of Health and Human Experience. Dr. Roberts has served on nine (9) different Boards of Directors ranging from local to international organizations. As of July 1, 2016 Dr. Roberts was appointed the
FGCU NCAA Faculty Athletics Representative by President Wilson G. Bradshaw and works closely with University Athletics, the Atlantic Sun Conference, and the NCAA.
Dr. Roberts is the founding Chief Research Officer (CRO) and authorized institutional representative at FGCU. He established the office of research and sponsored programs and led the development of a complete and comprehensive research infrastructure at FGCU. He served in this capacity for fourteen (14) years and until July 2012. In helping build FGCU, he also served as Associate Vice President for Off-Campus Programs and Continuing Education, and led several philanthropic fund raising efforts that resulted in major gifts. He is well versed with governmental affairs and successfully led federal appropriation efforts that generated over $11 million funding for the university.
